I idled in Zelda’s driveway while the metal door rolled up. I parked between the vans and Zelda’s VW, turned off the car, and walked toward Zelda. Tires squealed, and Cliff gunned his car into the garage, parking behind me.

“Am I being kidnapped?” I asked.

“You’re getting a good talking to,” Cliff said.

We ascended the stairs to Zelda’s house and sat at her table while each of them lectured me. They said I was too inexperienced to try investigating a murderer or a U.S. senator.

“You promised to leave this to me.” Cliff sounded frustrated.

“You promised to keep me informed.” I turned to Zelda. “He used me to lure out the person who killed Claudia.”

Zelda gasped. “Cliff!”

Sure I was vindicated, I described my whodunit board and the documents I had downloaded.

Cliff covered his ears with his palms. “I can’t know about this.”

Zelda blew out a pfft. “You listen to me, mister. This woman trusted you, and you deceived her. It’s no wonder she took matters into her own hands.” She turned to me. “Missy, my nephew is smitten with you, but you’re at least a year away from being ready for that kind of attention. Do you understand that this man has put his career on the line for you?”

“Cliff?” I searched his eyes. He nodded.

“I’m sorry.” Deep down, I knew all along that he had become too involved. I’d convinced myself I’d overcome my shallow selfishness by giving away things I didn’t need anymore, yet I’d expected him to give up everything for my sake without giving anything in return. “Geez.” I hid my face.

“Thing is, your attorney’s accusations convinced my captain that you need protection,” Cliff said. “He wants Laura Evans and me to move into your house until we get this settled.

She’ll bring her dog Duke.” He paused as if daring me to protest, then warned me to keep my whodunit board and downloaded documents away from them.
